Ministry will Reconstruct 116 Reservoirs

The Irrigation and Water Resources Management Ministry will reconstruct 116 reservoirs which had been destroyed during the recent floods in the Ampara District. The Ministry has targeted to complete the conservation programe during the next two weeks.
According to the Ministry sources there are around 348 badly damaged reservoirs. The Ministry had targeted to issue water for around 60,000 acres of paddy during the forthcoming Yala season in the Ampara District.
The Irrigation and Water Resources Management Ministry provide funds, human resources and physical resources to the Irrigation Department with immediate effect, a Ministry source said.
The Government has allocated around Rs. 200 million for reconstructing reservoirs alone in the alone in the Ampara District. Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva has directed the authority to take steps to solve every irrigation problem in the Ampara District.
Further, The Minister has promised the farming community and farming societies at the Ampara District to provide seed paddy, irrigation and other subsidies before the forthcoming Yala season. De Silva specially inspected water reservoirs such as Walagama Wewa, Walathapitiya Wewa, Oluvil Antiquate and the reservoirs which are constructing at Samanthurei area.
Ampara District Parliamentarian Sriyani Wijewicrama, Eastern Province Irrigation Minister Udumma Lebbe, Irrigation Director General G. G. Godaliyedda and Ministry officials participated.

Eco-Tourism from Mahaweli
Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka (MASL) is in a process of promoting eco-tourism project in Mahaweli Reservoirs. As the first step it is proposed to launch eco friendly Boat Service in selected Mahaweli Reservoirs. Agreements were signed between MASL and selected Investors for such Boat Services on 09. 02. 2011 at the MASL Operations Room. Hon Nimal Siripala de Silva, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management and the Director General of MASL were present at the occasion.

12 backhoe Loaders for Dam Safety

Minister of Irrigation & Water Resources Management, Hon. Nimal Siripala De Silva and Deputy Minister Hon. S.M.Chandrasena handed over the keys of 12 backhoe loaders to the implementing agencies of the project to be used for improving basic safety facilities and to uplift the operational & maintenance efficiencies of dams identified under the DSWRP project.

50,000 land grants for Mahaweli settlers

Under the special programme for issuing 50,000 land grants for Mahaweli farmers in system B, C and Udawalawa and a progress review meeting were also held with the participation of Hon. Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management in recently.

An opportunity was received to Hon. Minister of health Maithreepala Sirisena for granting these permits at Prathiba Hall in System B (Welikanda).
