Museum

Mahaweli Museum was established for the purpose of displaying the grandeur of our Hydraulic Civilization and the progress of the Mahaweli Development Programme, the largest ever irrigation, agricultural and socio-economic development programme ever undertaken in Sri Lanka. The museum consisted of a number of scale models of the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Programme and its various components such as the reservoirs, dams and settlement areas, a collection of large scale photographs, maps, murals and other display items.

A vast number of visitors, both local and foreign, and innumerable school children have visited the Mahaweli Centre since its inception. Special awareness and publicity programmes were held for the general public.

Comprehensive education programmes aimed at meeting the requirements of the school curriculum were held for the groups coming to Colombo. And mass scale seminars were held at schools both inside and outside Mahaweli areas.

Currently the museum is in the process of refurbishing and closed for the public.
