Home

The Ulhitiya reservoir is located on the Ulhitiya Oya, a right bank tributary of the Mahaweli ganga, 10 miles north of the Alutnuwara-Padiyatalawa highway, in its 60th mile from Kandy. It consists of an earthen dam across the main Ulhitiya Oya and it’s tributary Ratkinda Oya, which have a combined catchment of 109 sq.miles. This reservoir has a total capacity of 88,000 ac.ft and an active storage of 61,000 ac.ft. It forms an integral part of the right bank trans-basin canal which flows into it and saves about nine miles of canal construction. The mean annual yield at the dam site is

The inflow from the Trans-basin Canal into Ulhitiya Oya together with the inflow from its own catchment area is regulated by the Ulhitiya-ratkinda reservoirs for irrigation of Systems ‘C’ and ‘B’. The earthen embankment of the Ulhitiya – Ratkinda Reservoirs is of a total length of 5.9 km and consists of the Ulhitiya Dam and the Ratkinda Dam, which is across separate reservoirs thus formed are connected by an open cut link canal and have a total storage capacity of 144 million cubic meters. The two reservoirs function as a composite reservoir and have a radial gated spillway on the left bank of Ulhitiya Oya to discharge a 200 yar design flood of 1742 m3/s.

All construction work was done by local contractors and was funded by the Sri Lanka Government.
