Mahaweli Systems

The areas selected for irrigation development have been designated as ‘Systems’. Each system can be considered as a self contained unit with boundaries being more or less defined by natural conditions. The rainfall patterns, temperatures and topography are distinctive from each system. The Irrigation areas proposed in the Master Plan are grouped into 13 irrigation systems. Seven of these are System; A,B,C, D-1& D-2, E, F & G, with a total irrigated area of 470,000 acres, would be located in the basins of the Mahaweli Ganga and Maduru Oya; the remaining six systems; H, I, L, M, K & J are in the North-Central Part.
