Saudi Fund Project

System B Left Bank comprises 26,680 ha. of gross irrigable land of which 17,415 ha. of net area have been already opened up for agriculture. 16,836 farmer families and 5,090 non farmer families totaling to 21,926 families have been settled. Total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 10,168 Mn. Expenditure up to September 2003 is. Rs.9,118 Mn. The project was financed by the Saudi Fund for Development, European Union, USAID, OPEC and Government of Australia

Work items funded by the SFD includes (a) Improvement of the 1 km of branch canal, construction of about 115 km of Distributory canals, 265 km of field canals, about 235 km of main, secondary and field drains and about 25 minor tanks in the project area. (b) jungle Clearing and Rough leveling for Zones 2,3 & 4. (c) Construction schools, dormitories & teacher's quarters and the provision of furniture for schools, construction of social, administration & service building, utilities & hamlet electrification in Zone 3 & 4. (d) Construction of 4 km of MARD roads (link roads) about 144 km of Market Roads, about 266 Km. of village roads and access roads in Zone 2, 3 &4 and bitumen surfacing of 154 km. of market roads in the project area and (f) Provision of farm machinery, equipment, vehicles & spare parts & agricultural implements & building materials for farmers. Total loan amount was Saudi Riyals 85 m. (Rs. 607.325 m) (Saudi Riyal 1 = Rs.7.145 as at 30th May, 1984).

Development works in Zone 1 , Zone 2 and Zone 5 have been completed while 78% work in Zone 3 and 57% work in Zone 4A have also been completed. Overall progress of project parts financed by SFD was 93% as at end December 2003.

Budget allocation for the year 2004 is Rs. 82.5 million. Targets for the year include completion of balance work of water supply schemes, provision
